Troubleshooting Guide | Poor Tool Life

Misalignment

Solution: Check accuracy of axis in machinery or realign spindle or possibly rebuild spindle assembly to achieve accuracy required.

Tap run out in holder

Solution: Change to a rigid tool holder, if tool life improves then replace toolholder

Wrong or insufficient lubricant

Solution: Consult Lube specialist for proper cutting oils

Minor Diameter too small

Solution: Select proper size from Spiralock Drill Chart

Minor Diameter work hardened during drilling

Solution: Use a sharper drill or boring tool for the minor diameter operation

Hard Spots in material

Solution: Anneal material if possible

Chips packed in flute

Solution: Clean out chips before tapping or drill minor diameter deeper to provide more area for chips

Incorrect flute hook for material being tapped

Solution: Obtain material specifications and consult Spiralock sales for correct style tap.

Incorrect lead chamfer

Solution: Change to tap with increased chamfer. This may require more depth in minor diameter for blind holes

Tap requires a special surface treatment

Solution: Obtain material specifications and consult Spiralock sales for correct surface treatment.

Tap teeth are chipping

Solution: verify that tap is not cutting into an angled or radiused surface

Tap run out in holder

Solution: Change to a rigid tool holder, if tool life improves then replace toolholder

Tap over cutting or under cutting its lead

Solution: Change to a rigid tool holder, if gauging is correct, then replace toolholder

Loading on tap teeth

Solution: Increase amount of coolant, direct coolant to end of tap

Hole work hardened during minor diameter drilling

Solution: Use a sharper drill or boring tool for the minor diameter operation

Chipped teeth in tap

Solution: Verify that tap is not cutting into an angled or radiused surface

Tap worn on cutting edge

Solution: Regrind or replace tap
